And the Fair Continues!!!

Sporting the Iowa State Fair apparel!!!

A typical sight in Iowa!!!

Award winning decorative corn!

Row upon row of field corn on display!

Shy bunny!

Oreo pig

Oink, oink!

Chris took this perfect picture of this sweet sweet man! He talked our legs off but it was fun!

I think I need to wind up the fair photos today! We took tons and it was a lot of fun but perhaps my "followers" are a little tired of Midwest pictures!!! I decided to put a few more up today and then I will quit and move onto something else exciting...not sure what that is!

I am getting ready for my trip to Ohio. I am driving Chris's car tomorrow and then he will fly in on Friday to Columbus. He and his dad are going to do the big salmon fishing trip on Saturday-Tuesday and I am going to hang out in Lima and stay at the house with Chris's brother Carl and the kitties!!! I am sure i will be getting together with Colleen and Bryan and Meredith a few times too so I am looking forward to that for sure! Then it is on to Sebring to see my mom and Columbiana to see my sister and her husband and then a stop in Freeport, IL on the way home to hopefully see some friends we haven't seen for 12 years! Should be a fun time and hopefully the fishing trip will go well.

Got the basement carpet all taken care of yesterday and it looks pretty good so today I finish up vacuuming up all the fragments and put things back in place as much as I can before I head out tomorrow. I am just very glad to have the carpet taken care of---now to get the painter in to take care of the damaged walls and ceilings and we will be well on the way! Woo hoo! Life is good!

The Fair Continues!

Working at the cow wash....woo hoo...working at the cow wash, yeah!

Waiting for the show!

Taking a snooze.

What are you looking at??

A very loud sheepie!

Getting ready for the show!

My dream machine---no kidding! I want one!!!

Now that is a big John Deere!!!

Today I thought I would post some more random fair pictures for you to enjoy! I may be including a few that Chris took---we kind of are both into this lately and we share pictures so sometimes one of us takes one that is much better than the other of a particular thing or from a different view so that is kind of cool. I am still trying to figure out all the settings on my camera also which is challenging at times for me!!! I sometimes just don't get it!!!

I think the fair was great but i think it is not as large as the Ohio State Fair. I just didn't think that there were as many animals there and that is what I love about fairs. I also did not see any Snacking and Packing in the 4 H area but maybe they don't do that anymore???? Since that is my one claim to fame---winning a trophy for 1st in Snacking and Packing when i was in 4Th or 5Th grade (not sure) you know that that is my passion! And what won it for me??? That little baby tootsie roll tucked in for a bit of a surprise later..... (I was such a dork...). Ah well. Enjoy the pictures!!!

More from the Fair!

Did you know that llamas can do obstacle courses?? Well, SOME can, We watched a little show for a bit and saw what they could and wouldn't do. I get the feeling that llamas can be a little stubborn! We watched them go over a bridge, thtrhough a sparkly curtain, through a huge inner tube, through a water hazard, through innertubes on the ground and even observed their backing skills. It was actually pretty neat to watch and who would have thought that there would be a whole llama training thing going on??? We saw more llamas than i have ever seen in one place and they all were well behaved which translates into no spitting. Thank goodness. i was taking pictures of some of them in their pens and of course little old llama farmer came up to me to talk! You know I have the gift! He was ready to sell me 18 llamas but I am thinking that that would definitely NOT go over well with the Pebble Creek Homeowner's Association so I passed! But the llamas were cool, Chris did not get any llama spit on him and it was a cool part of the fair experience!

Llamas and Sheep and Cows oh my!

Chris would have rather me left this picture off I am sure!!! But what is a fair experience without a corn dog??

We didn't try this delicacy but it sounds interesting, don't you think???

Not sure about this one either....

Everything on a Stick!!!

The line for this was waayyyy too long so we did not sample the pork chop on a stick but it did look yummy!

Chris got this--nut roll covered in chocolate on a stick....I passed and he had about half of it-- a little rich!!

These were yummy---Grater Taters---with ranch dressing. A little hard to eat walking around so we found a bench and ate!!

And what would a fair be without a huge turkey leg to munch on??/

It was been quiet on the blogfront for a few days...sorry but been working on the house and not much to blog about that would be worth writing down!!! But yesterday----oh yesterday we went went to the Iowa State Fair in Des Moines and had a great time. We walked and walked and walked and saw a lot of fun things and of course we took pictures so I going to do "theme blogs" about the wondrous Iowa State Fair!!!

Today I thought I would focus on the food of the fair. If you could put it on a stick---it was there. Even if you couldn't put it on a stick it was there. I totally enjoyed the creations and seeing different foods that people were chowing down on and believe me---Iowans know how to eat fair food. So enjoy the pictures and look for a few days worth of fair stuff!!!

So Chris wants me to write a book...

Chris hooked me up with this website called FastPencil where you can write books and get them published ---for a fee of course but it is a neat concept since you can actually suck your blogs into it. So far I have only been able to get the last 25 posts put in there but i will see if I can figure out how to get the older ones in.

But anyhoo---Chris seems to think I have something worthwhile to say or maybe it is that he is tired of listening to me and wants me to redirect my energies??? Could be a little bit of both. Let me know what you think....subjects, musings, ramblings, devotional types of material?? I am game to give it a go!

Boom Boom Boom

This week has been the Pyrotechnics Guild Convention at the Fairgrounds here in Mason City. Seeing as we live about a mile and half from the fairgrounds (if that) we have had the pleasure all week of lots of loud noises and fireworks. All week I found myself straightening pictures and realigning things in the house---due to the house shaking that was going all during the week. Of couse the Mason City paper reported on all the events and the letters on line complaining about the entire convention reached epic proportions. Evidentally they had extended the noise ordinance this week until 1:30am to accomodate this event. I do know that I was sound asleep many nights and found myself jarred away at 12:30 and 1:00 am due to the loud blasts coming from the convention. Now it is only a week out of my life but I get cranky when I don't get my sleep!!! So even tho I like fireworks and am glad these folks came to town to spend their money I am not sorry that the noise level will recede today!

Last night was touted as the grand finale so when Chris got home from Toronto we sat out on the deck and waited to see the show. A lot was ground level so we couldn't see but when they started popping up higher it was pretty spectacular. Of course my battery on my camera died before the final best ones but I did get to enjoy seeing (and hearing) them for the last time last night. Chris packed it in before me and went to bed but it was me and all the neighbors hanging out in the back yards watching.....so enjoy the shots...

Scissor Woman to Eraser Babe

Tracy Hedegard, social services director at the Salvation Army, looks over backpacks packed with school supplies for students in need. (KRISTIN BUEHNER/The Globe Gazette)

Well I am trying to venture out into the world of volunteering again......I know,I know! It took me long enough! Since we have moved back from Australia I have been concentrating on getting things done here in the house in preparation for selling it, settling family members, visiting family, going here and there with Chris, etc. but it is time. It is long past time! I need to jump back in again and I am ready! So yesterday my first experience was helping at the Salvation Army (Salvo to you Aussies!) and it was a fun morning. We were getting school bags assembled to pass out to kids who may not be able to buy them for the upcoming school year. We ended up putting 550 backpacks together for different age groups. The social services director (pictured above from the Globe Gazette article) did a great job of getting it all organized and set up and the whole process went very smoothly. I was impressed!

So what did I do?? Well I started out as "scissor woman", moved on to be "eraser babe" and then finally spent the majority of my time as "backpack mover down the liner" gal!!! It was a good time and by the end of about 3 hours and lots of volunteer involvement we had the job pretty much done. Today they will be handing out the backpacks filled with goodies and they will go to lots and lots of area children who will be able to start the school year out with some great school supplies that were donated by community members. Hats off to Tracy and the Salvation Army for a great thing that they are doing.

So I continue to look for some volunteer experiences. I really wanted to finally get trained for Hospice but due to some recent reorganization they won't be doing a training class until the spring. I was pretty bummed about that because you can't even help out in the office now without the training. So my search continues...you all can keep that in your prayers that I find the right place that wants me. So far I haven't gotten an overwhelming response to my willingness to help out but maybe I have not hit upon the right place yet!!!

Helping others is such a big part of my life and I like to do more than just giving a check. I think my parents instilled that in me early on that you need to give of yourself as much as you can. Of course at several points in my life I have gotten burned out but I am finally ready to re engage!!! It seems right with Chris being gone so much that I find someplace that can use an extra set of hands. Well enough of my ramblings today about the virtues of volunteering---I am preaching the choir here!

Some Great Ideas for Simplifying Life from Daily Good

I can't take credit for the following list of items but it came in one of my emails today from DailyGood from a blog entitled Zen Habits. While I am not very zen-like at times I still could see the basic wisdom in these and think it is a good exercise and a great way to try to simplify things. If anything has become clear to me in the past couple of years it is that we don't all have to be living at breakneck speed in order to be effective and live our lives to the fullest. My "down time" has been wonderful and though I can not attest to being totally simplified in my life or always being calm about things I guess with age I have figured out the importance of what is really important in life and that is more the relationships that I have with people ---friends and family---those are the things that matter. Anyway, I thought this was worth posting today so I hope that you enjoy it!

1. Make a short list. Take out a sheet of paper and fold it into a small square, perhaps 3×5 inches. Or take out an index card. Now make a short list of the 4-5 most important things in your life. What’s most important to you? What do you value most? What 4-5 things do you most want to do in your life? Simplifying starts with these priorities, as you are trying to make room in your life so you have more time for these things.

2. Drop 1 commitment. Think about all the things in your life that you’re committed to doing, and try to find one that you dread doing. Something that takes up time but doesn’t give you much value. Perhaps you’re on a team, or coaching something, or on a board or committee, or whatever. Something that you do each day or week or month that you don’t really want to do. Now take action today to drop that commitment. Call someone, send an email, telling the appropriate person or people that you just don’t have the time. You will feel relief. I’d recommend dropping all commitments that don’t contribute to your short list (from Item #1), but for today, just drop 1 commitment.

3. Purge a drawer. Or a shelf, or a countertop, or a corner of a room. Not an entire room or even an entire closet. Just one small area. You can use that small area as your base of simplicity, and then expand from there. Here’s how to purge: 1) empty everything from the drawer or shelf or corner into a pile. 2) From this pile, pick out only the most important things, the stuff you use and love. 3) Get rid of the rest. Right now. Trash it, or put it in your car to give away or donate. 4) Put the stuff you love and use back, in a neat and orderly manner.

4. Set limits. Read Haiku Productivity for more. Basically, you set limits for things you do regularly: email, RSS posts, tasks, feeds, items in your life, etc. And try to stick with the limits. Today, all you have to do is set limits for a few things in your life. Tomorrow, try to stick with them.

5. Simplify your to-do list. Take a look at your to-do list. If it’s more than 10 items long, you can probably simplify it a bit. Try to find at least a few items that can be eliminated, delegated, automated, outsourced, or ignored. Shorten the list. This is a good habit to do once a week.

6. Free up time. Simplifying your life in general is a way to free up time to do the stuff you want to do. Unfortunately, it can be hard to find time to even think about how to simplify your life. If that’s the case, free up at least 30 minutes a day for thinking about simplifying. Or alternatively, free up a weekend and think about it then. How can you free up 30 minutes a day? Just a few ideas: wake earlier, watch less TV, eat lunch at your desk, take a walk for lunch, disconnect from the Internet, do email only once today, shut off your phones, do 1 less thing each day.

7. Clear your desk. I can personally attest to the amazing feeling that a clean desk can give you. It’s such a simple thing to do, and yet it does so much for you. If your desk is covered with papers and notes and gadgets and office supplies, you might not be able to get this done today. But here are the basic steps: 1) Clear everything off your desk and put it in a pile (either in your inbox or on the floor). 2) Process the pile from top to bottom, one item at a time. Do not defer decisions on any item — deal with them immediately and quickly. 3) For each item, either file it immediately, route it to someone else, trash it, or note it on your to-do list (and put it in an “action” folder). If it’s a gadget or office supply, find a place for it in your desk drawers (or get rid of it). 4) Repeat until your pile is empty and your desk is clear. Be sure to get rid of any knick knacks. Your desk should have your computer, your inbox, perhaps a notepad, and maybe a family photo (but not many). Ahh, a clear desk! 5) From now on, put everything in your inbox, and at least once a day, process it in the same way as above.

8. Clear out your email inbox. This has the same psychological effect as a clear desk. Is your email inbox always full of read and unread messages? That’s because you’re delaying decisions on your emails. If you have 50, let’s say, or fewer emails in your inbox, you can process them all today. If you have hundreds, you should put them in a temporary folder and get to them one chunk at a time (do 20 per day or something). Here’s how you process your inbox to empty — including emails already in your inbox, and all future incoming emails: 1) process them top to bottom, one at a time, deciding and disposing of each one immediately. 2) Your choices are to delete, archive, respond immediately (and archive or delete), forward (and archive or delete), or mark it with a star (or something like that) and note it on your to-do list to respond to later (and archive). 3) Process each email like that until the inbox is empty. 4) Each time you check your email, process to empty. Ahh, an empty inbox!

9. Move slower. We rush through the day, from one task to another, from one appointment to another, until we collapse on the couch, exhausted, at the end of the day. Instead, simplify your life by doing less (see Items 1, 4 and 5) and doing them more slowly. Eat slower, drive slower, walk slower, shower slower, work slower. Be more deliberate. Be present. This isn’t something you’re going to master today, but you can start practicing today.

10. Single-task. Instead of multi-tasking, do one thing at a time. Remove all distractions, resist any urge to check email or do some other habitual task like that while you’re doing the task at hand. Stick to that one task, until you’re done. It’ll make a huge difference in both your stress level and your productivity.

More from Austin!

Vineyards at Flat Creek

Winery at Flat Creek

Chris and Micah looking a little goofy!!! Blame it on the heat!

Butterfly in garden at Flat Creek Winery
One of the little trips we made in Austin with Micah was to go to a winery which was a lot of fun. I learned a lot!!! Not that I will probably remember it but it was really a fun time and very interesting to learn some of the things about wine making!!! The grounds were beautiful and they had these awesome gardens where there were tons and tons of butterflies flitting about. Butterflies do not pose for pictures and I did not get very good shots (Still figuring out my camera settings!) but Chris actually got a couple of really good shots of some. I may post them some other time and give him credit!!!

Austin at its best!!!

I am posting a few pictures over the next couple days from our trip to Austin! We had a blast! And it was so good to see Micah all settled in and into the groove. He has such a great apartment right downtown and he has done such a great job picking out furniture and stuff. It was great to see him!!! I miss my boys!

These are just a few but I will post a few more over the next couple of days. I didn't take my laptop with me this trip since the hinge on it is a little weird these days so I had to wait to blog till now!!! But it is all good!
